Salute to Squire: Memories of the Warren Junior Military Band

Salute to Squire: Memories of the Warren Junior Military Band

The Canfield Community Concert Band will present a special tribute concert, Salute to Squire: Memories of the Warren Junior Military Band, on Sunday, May 4, at 3:00 pm, at Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown. More than ten members of the Canfield Community Concert Band are proud alumni of the Warren Junior Military Band. Admission is free. More information available at canfieldccband.org

The concert honors the legacy of the Warren Junior Military Band (WJMB), a regional treasure that left a lasting mark on the Mahoning Valley and beyond. After the WJMB concluded operations in 2010, the Canfield Community Concert Band acquired the band’s music library. This performance will highlight selections from that historic collection.

This concert is a heartfelt tribute to the values of musical excellence, patriotism, and tradition instilled by longtime director Donald W. “Squire” Hurrelbrink, who led the band for 66 years.

The concert program will feature favorites from the WJMB repertoire, including:

Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams; Excerpts from 1812 Overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky;
Caribbean Fantasy by John Morrissey; Selections from Mr. Lucky by Henry Mancini;
Amparito Roca by Jaime Texidor; Patriotic marches by John Philip Sousa, And more!

Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to support Zion Lutheran Church’s food ministry by bringing canned goods or monetary donations.

The Warren Junior Military Band began as the VFW Boys Band in 1927 and became known for its emotional appeal, artistic excellence, and discipline. Under Squire Hurrelbrink’s direction, the band earned national acclaim, performing across North America and Europe, winning numerous championships, and delighting audiences with their precision and spirit.

The Canfield Community Concert Band is an all-volunteer ensemble open to musicians of all ages and abilities from across the Mahoning Valley. Formed in 1976, the band performs throughout the region and continues its mission to bring quality concert music to the community. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at Canfield High School.
