The International Programs Office at YSU is holding a unique and cross-cultural Model United Nations conference for local high school students this July 26-28, 2021.

Model United Nations is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. At YSU, we are pursuing a new and innovative model of Model UN that allows for less formal debates and focuses more on cross cultural dialogue, understanding, and collaboration. The three-day conference will train students on the first day how to participate in the new committees that will ask students from different schools to take on the knowledge and stance of different countries on various issues.

Students will be assigned to a country and will debate on behalf of that country issues like human rights, climate change, immigration, and national security. Each committee will tackle a different issue from the perspective of the represented countries. Each individual committee will be expected to produce a resolution to resolve issues discussed as an act of cross-cultural collaboration. The International Programs Office will have international students from each country participating in the conference so participants will be able to discuss the issues of their perspective countries with international students. The conference will take place outdoors across the YSU campus, and have backup indoor locations. We have social distancing and safety measures in place as well for the conference.

The goal of this program is to create a global understanding and cross-cultural conversations. Students will have the opportunity to take on the viewpoints of a country and discuss global implications on various issues including human rights, climate change, national security, and immigration. They will also have the opportunity to discuss various issues with international students from the countries they are representing. This will enable students of the greater Youngstown area to gain a global perspective and gain skills in cross-cultural discussions and understanding, debate, problem solving, global resolutions, and critical thinking. This program will take part across the YSU campus.

Including parking, the camp will cost $85.00 for the 3 days. Without parking, the cost is $75.00. It will be from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM with drop offs beginning at 7:45 AM and pick-up until 5:30 PM.
