YSU Hispanic Heritage Month Organizing Committee: Cultural Celebration at OCCHA

The YSU Hispanic Heritage Month Organizing Committee presents a Cultural Celebration at OCCHA, on Monday, October 7, 5:30 - 8 pm. This Mahoning Valley Cultural Alliance event focuses on Hispanic flavors and traditions. Tickets $25 for MVHS members and $30 for non-MVHS members. Reservations can be made at 330-743-2589. 

YSU Ward Beecher Planetarium: Celestial Mythology

The YSU Ward Beecher Planetarium presents Mesoamerica Celestial Mythology, on Saturday, September 21, 3:30 pm, at the YSU Ward Beecher Planetarium, on the YSU campus.  In this live presentation of the night sky, we will journey through the stars and explore the different ways they take shape across cultures and time, focusing on Mesoamerican lore.More information from the YSU Department of Physics & Astronomy at 330-941-3616.


NEA Big Read Kick-off Event: An Evening of Immigrant Narratives

Lit Youngstown presents the NEA Big Read Kick-off Event, An Evening of Immigrant Narratives, a free event on Tuesday, September 17, 5:30 pm, at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown,  on Elm Street, in Youngstown.  This event will center around the Big Read selection Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea. It will include a presentation of the Wick Poetry Center’s Traveling Stanzas, presentations and narratives from recent Youngstown immigrants, followed by a potluck dinner. 

YSU Hispanic Heritage Month: Mathematics Colloquium Series

The YSU Hispanic Heritage Month Organizing Committee presents a Mathematics Colloquium on How Computers Communicate Using Math, featuring Dr. Hiram Lopez, on  Friday, September 13rd, 3:00 pm, at the YSU Lincoln Building, Room 510. Dr. Lopez will discuss how coding theory can be used to reliably transmit information and store information efficiently.  

YSU Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremony

The YSU Hispanic Heritage Organizing Committee presents the Opening Ceremony for Hispanic Heritage Month, in the Rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market Street, in Youngstown, on Thursday, September 12, at 12:15 pm. This event will feature a flag ceremony representing 22 Hispanic countries as well a musical performance. The keynote speaker will be Victor Cruz, YSU Alumnus & Corporate Director of Revenue Management for Sandpiper Hospitality.

Connecting to Nature through Service: Berlin Lake National Public Lands Day

The Butler Institute of American Art: Transcendence, by Chantell Van Erbe

The Butler Institute of American Art presents the exhibit Transcendence, by Chantell Van Erbe, Sunday, September 8 - Sunday, October 20.  The paintings exhibit a freshness of vision, raw energy and immediacy of place, while bridging the trends of 21st Century Modernism with the new realism movement.  The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 11 AM- 4 PM and is closed on Monday, Tuesday, and major Holidays.
