Our 2021 Emerging Visual Artist, James Shawn Crum explores the very real possibility that as a gay black male, he exists within several realities. Painting allows him to regroup and reconcile the conflicts that ensue. His art practice is a refuge, a cosmic exhale, and a record of existence. The creative urge frees him from anger, transforming it into effort.
