Life After High School

Salem Public Library announces the "Life after High School" series designed for high school juniors, seniors and interested graduates.  The three-part series will help students prepare for brighter futures by explaining some of the options in education and training.  The events will take place on Tuesdays, September 2, 9 & 16, 6:30 - 8:00 pm, in Room 23 of the Salem Memorial Building located at 785 E. YSU Wind Ensemble Concert

The Dana School of Music announces an outdoor concert by the YSU Wind Ensemble on Wednesday, September 3, at 7:00 pm, at Harrison Common, located on Walnut Street across from the MVR. The concert features a variety of music including music from the soundtrack of the movie Robin Hood to a patriotic Armed Forces Salute. The concert is free and open to the public. YSU Centofanti Annual Symposium

The Youngstown State University Centofanti Annual Symposium presents Salvatore Augustine Giunta, the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq or Afghanistan, the first living service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, and the eighth service member to receive the nation's highest military decoration for valor in Iran and Afghanistan.  The Symposium will take place on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:30 pm at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Mahoning Valley Historical Society Founders Day Open House

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is hosting a free Founders Day Open House at the Arms Family Museum on Sunday September 7th from 1-5 pm, in celebration of the Society’s 139th anniversary.  The museum will be open for tours, the education staff will have indoor and outdoor games and activities for all ages and refreshments. Commercial Composting Outlook meeting

A session to explore how to divert the region’s organic wastes from landfills to create biologically compost will be held on Thursday, September 11, from 1:00 to 4:30 pm at Fellows Riverside Gardens of Mill Creek MetroParks. Topics at the free public session will include identifying and collecting materials; compost benefits to business, families and communities; complying with siting and regulations; finding suitable markets; and exploring multiple aspects of profitability. Registration information is available at 330-549-9408.

FREE Friday Cooking Class: Indoor Grill and Chill

Iron Roots Urban Farm presents their cooking class schedule. The classes are designed to work with families, local growers, and community cooks to help foster a healthier and more sustainable community. All classes will be held on Fridays from 6:00-8:00 PM in the HMHP Foundation Demonstration Kitchen located at 822 Billingsgate Avenue in Youngstown. 7 Days of STEM - Youngstown Regional Science & Technology Festival

 The Youngstown Regional Science & Technology Festival called “7 Days of STEM” begins on Monday, September 15 and concludes on Sunday, September 21.  The seven-day celebration of STEM education will be hosted at numerous venues, with various participating institutions, organizations and businesses.  Learn about composting one day, see how the Butler Institute of American Art is using technology in art the next, or discover the 3D printing process.  The full schedule of events at OHWOWKids.org/7-days-of-stem

 

Healing Mother Earth 6th Annual Native American Powwow

The United Eastern Lenape Nation is proud to present the Healing Mother Earth 6th Annual Native American Powwow, September 5 - 7, at Fischer’s Pine Lake, 3796 Maple Road in Jefferson, OH. All drums and dancers are welcome to participate! There will be Native Vendors, Native American Storytelling, Flute & Auction; Evening Activities include Trade Blanket, Moonlight Dancing, and Drumming. 

Mahoning Valley Chorale Auditions

The Mahoning Valley Chorale is looking for new members to join us in our 2014-15 season. Membership is open to all singers with a strong interest in performing a variety of choral music. Everyone is welcome to audition. Auditions are by appointment only on Sunday afternoon, August 24 at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown.  Reservations can be made at 330-707-2144. 2014 "Hustle 4 Heart Reach" 5K Run/Walk

Heart Reach Ministries will host its "Hustle 4 Heart Reach" 5K Run/Walk at the Masters Pavilion in Boardman Park on Saturday, October 4. The race is open to the public and begins promptly at 8:00 a.m.  Pre-Registration is strongly encouraged. More information is available at 330-744-2000.
