MVHS: Memories of Christmas Past

Memories of Christmas Past, the annual holiday spectacular at the Arms Family Museum, is in its seventh year in the 1905 Arts & Crafts mansion of Olive and Wilford Arms, and the home of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.  The seven period rooms of the Arms Family home are filled with rare, vintage decorations that include ornaments, lighting, trees, toys and trains.  This display features many pieces from the Historical Society’s collection as well as items on loan from private collectors.  Museum hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

 

The Pivotal Right, A History of the Women’s Suffrage Movement

Traci Manning, the Curator of Education at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society will give a talk on The Pivotal Right, A History of the Women's Suffrage Movement, at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, at 325 West Federal Street, on Thursday, October 16, at noon.

 

 

1914-2014: A Century of Steel making in Brier Hill

Rick Rowlands, Executive Director, Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum, will give a talk titled 1914-2014: A Century of Steelmaking in Brier Hill, at the Tyler Center of the Mahoning Valley Historical Center on West Federal Street in Youngstown, on Thursday, September 18 at noon.

YSU Maag Library Notable Latinos Exhibit

The YSU Hispanic Heritage Month Committee presents Notable Latinos at the YSU Maag Library running through Wednesday, October 15.  Notable Latinos is a display of items from the Maag Library collection featuring the important contributions of renowned Latino authors, poets, musicians, and painters.  The exhibit is located on the main floor of Maag Library on the YSU campus. Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremony

This Opening Ceremony for Hispanic Heritage Month is on Thursday, September 18, at 12:15pm at the Mahoning County Courthouse.  The event will feature a flag ceremony representing 22 Hispanic countries as well as musical performances. The keynote speaker will be attorney Miriam Ocasio and YSU student Josiah Banks will serve as emcee. The event is co-sponsored the YSU Hispanic Heritage Planning Committee and the YSU Office of Student Diversity Programs.  More information about all Hispanic Heritage Month events is available at 330-941-2086.

 

 

 

 

Rebuilding History: A Walking Tour of Downtown Youngstown

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society presents an after-work walking tour of Downtown Youngstown, on Thursday, September 11. The  event is part of the Young Leaders History-To-Go Series and will begin at 5:30 pm at the Erie Terminal building on Westt Commerce Street, with a brief tour of that recently restored property. The tour will visit several locations before concluding with a reception at the Rust Belt Brewing Company. The tour and reception are open to the public. The Dana School of Music presents a Music at Noon concert featuring the Dana Brass Quintet at the Butler Institute of American Art on Wednesday, September 17 at 12:15 pm.

"Sarah's Song"- A Musical Narrative

The Dana School of Music presents guest faculty artist, soprano Suzanne Rudnytsky, performing "Sarah's Song"- A Musical Narrative, in the Bliss Recital Hall on the YSU campus, on Monday, September 22 at 5:30 pm.  The concert is free and open to the public.

Dana Chamber Orchestra at Stambaugh Auditorium

The Dana School of Music presents a concert by the Dana Chamber Orchestra at Stambaugh Auditorium on Sunday, September 14th, at 4:00 pm.  Ticket information is available at stambaughauditorium.com.   Admission is free for YSU students, faculty and staff with an ID.
