ODNR Issues 20 More Permits for Southern Utica

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 20 new permits for horizontal wells in the Utica shale last week – all in what is considered the southern tier of the oil and gas play.

Oklahoma City-based Gulfport Energy Corp. received six permits -- five for wells in Monroe County and one for a horizontal well in Guernsey County.

Eclipse Resources Inc., based in State College, Pa., was awarded five permits to drill in Guernsey County.

Three other Pennsylvania companies – Rice Energy and EM Energy Ohio, based in Canonsburg, and Consol Energy of Pittsburgh – received two permits each for new wells in the Utica, ODNR reported.

Rice secured its permits for wells in Belmont County. CNX Gas Co. LLC, a subsidiary of Consol, and EM Energy were awarded two permits each to drill in Washington County.

Hess Ohio Developments LLC, a division of New York City-based Hess Corp., received three permits to drill in Harrison County.

There were no new permits issued during the week for wells in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties, ODNR records show.

The agency reports 49 rigs are operating throughout the Utica as of July 26. Since 2010, 1,421 permits have been issued and 970 horizontal wells have been drilled in the Utica. Of those wells, 487 remain in production.

No new well permits were issued in the Utica for Mercer or Lawrence counties in western Pennsylvania during the week, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection records show.

SWEPI LP, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, did receive a permit to drill deeper at its Twentier 2070 well in Lawrence County, the DEP reported.
